Spokeshaves

Spokeshaves are, after drawknifes, the chairmakers most used tools. They work in a similar way to planes. Their blades are narrower than planes, and they are held by two handles on each size.

There are mainly two types of spokeshaves. The low angle spokeshaves (right) are, like low angle planes, ideal for end grain. The high angle spokeshaves are, like the jack plane, multi-purpose tools. They are used to shape spokeshaves, bows, crests and seats.
