Planes
There are a huge number of types of planes. The chairmaker uses the jack plane (upper left), the smoothing plane (upper, right), compass planes (the two lower planes) and forkstaff planes (middle).
The jack and smoothing plane are used to prepare the seat blank before carving.
The compass planes are used after the scorps to refine the shape of the seat.
The forkstaff planes are used to shape the spindles and the bows after these have been roughed out with the drawknife and the spokeshave.
