This model first appeared in 1765 in the state of Massachussetts. Its carved volutes make it an ideal companion to the Nantucket Fanback.

Fanback chairs are often mistaken from comb back chairs. There is, however, an important difference between them. True, they both have crests that can be identical. The fanback, however, has stiles that support the crest and these stiles usually fan out at the extremities of the back. Comb back do not have stiles - they rely uniquely on the spindles to hold the crest.

The fanback model was produced in great numbers in the Philadelphia area and all over New-England. The style was rather ignored in New-York City, another important Windsor chair crafting center.
