The Birdcage, named after its resemblance to the named object, is probably the best known model in Quebec, since it was in fashion at the time the first chairmakers set up shop in Montreal. In fact, a lot of them advertised them as "bamboo" chairs, illustrating the "chinoiserie" inspired turnings.

It also has, unlike earlier models, "box" stretchers instead of "H" stretchers, common with the advent of industrial practices in chairmaking.

It is part of the "Rod Back" family, common in the Federal period (1790-1830). They are also often referred to as "painted chairs", because their painted decorations were usually extensive.
